Part-time Grade 7-8 English Language Teacher (remote)

Banyan Global Learning is seeking dynamic, camera-ready, and charismatic middle school (gr. 7-8) TEACHERS with strong classroom management, solid edtech chops and the ability to multitask with technology while teaching live over video to whole classrooms. The position is for whole group teaching in addition to individual student conferencing - all via distance learning - in support of classrooms in Taiwan and China.

Our school-based distance learning model connects one remote teacher to one LARGE WHOLE GROUP of students in classrooms in Taiwan. Each classroom also has an on-site local partner teacher. All instruction is in English and our students are English language learners.

Teachers must be credentialed and exceptional. This is a fully remote position and so teachers must have strong internet, good lighting, a professional setting and a noise-free environment.

Part-time positions only. Classes run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 am to 9 am Eastern Daylight Time / 6 am to 8am Eastern Standard Time. Teachers must be available to teach on both days. Teaching/conferencing time and weekly meetings are synchronous, but any planning, grading, and class administration can be done on your own schedule.

Successful candidates may also teach special event lessons to classrooms in the U.S. and Canada or support our kindergarten distance learning program to China.

COMPENSATION

  • Part-time (approx. 4 teaching hours + up to 4 planning and meeting hours/week, with possibility of additional project work)
  • $40/hr for teaching; $30/hr for small-group conferencing; $20/hr for planning, meetings, and other duties
  • This position is not eligible for company-sponsored benefits

DUTIES

  • Facilitate content-based, student-centered English instruction focusing on language, culture and technology AND/OR content-related individual student and small-group conferencing.
  • Teach classes live to Asia over video conferencing (large classes, Grades 7-8, as assigned)
  • Adjust lesson plans, create slide decks and give feedback on assignments as required by the course
  • Update LMS (Google Classroom) and other EdTech platforms, as required for the lessons
  • Attend weekly meetings with teaching colleagues and monthly meetings with local co-teachers
  • Compile and finalize mid-term and final grades for their grade-level
  • Complete general unit/lesson revisions (including documenting the revisions clearly)
  • Perform other grade-related duties as required

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

  • US teaching credential (multi-subject or ESL elementary and/or junior high or high school humanities) AND/OR Masters-level degree in TESOL (MA-TESOL, MA Applied Linguistics, DELTA, Trinity Dip.)
  • Avid user of technology in and out of the classroom
  • Ability to teach while multi-tasking with technology
  • Solid whole group classroom management skills and animated, engaging teaching style
  • Subscribe to the philosophy of progressive education while acknowledging the necessity of standardized student achievement
  • Fluent English speaker with legal right to work in U.S.
  • 3+ years experience preferred
  • Preference for candidates residing in and working from CA, GA, MD, MN, MO, MT, NJ, NM, NY, OR, PA and WA
  • Must be physically located in the United States (exception: SOFA status individuals)

CALENDAR

  • Training and class preparation through the spring/summer; classes begin at the end of August/beginning of September
  • Paid training (including team teaching) throughout spring semester before taking on regular teaching or conferencing hours in the fall semester.
  • Classes take place Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 7 am to 9 am Eastern Daylight Time / 6 am to 8am Eastern Standard Time. Successful candidate must either teach or facilitate conferencing two mornings per week
  • We operate mostly on the Taiwanese school calendar, so several U.S. holidays (especially those that fall on Mondays) are required workdays.
  • The Taiwanese calendar has a month-long break for Lunar New Year and a two-month break over summer vacation.
